Encoding means converting information into a form (a pattern) that can be stored, retrieved and processed. When you speak, you "encode" your thoughts into sentences of your language. Encoding is associated with a "carrier" of information. Your thought, encoded in a sentence, can be "carried" as a sound wave, be written on paper or stored in a computer memory.
